What 10 years at a Great Place to Work actually feels like

We sat down with a group of Luminary team members who've each clocked up ten years or more with us, and asked them to look back: the moments that stuck, the things that surprised them, and what's kept them here through it all.

Luminary has grown a lot over the past decade. From our office in Melbourne expanding to offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya. We've built a team spread across Australia and Indonesia; different cities, different time zones, different day-to-day rhythms. But ask anyone who's been here long enough, and there are things come up again and again: the quality of the work, the people they work alongside, and a culture that's managed to stay great even as the agency has grown. The team members sharing their stories below span disciplines and offices, but they have one thing in common - they've seen Luminary change, and they're still here for it.

When I joined ‘The agency formerly known as Get Started’, we’d just celebrated our 15th birthday and got a proper posh office in Melbourne’s CBD. There was a sense that we’d ‘grown up’, but in reality we were still very much in the awkward teenage phase. We had a name that our team members were embarrassed to say at barbecues, and we weren’t quite sure who we were becoming. We had an archive of marketing materials that would make your grandmother blush (hilarious to dig up for team events but not so good for an agency trying to establish itself as a serious player in the market). All that changed when we rebranded in 2018 and changed our name to Luminary. The trajectory of the agency and our brand since then has been a phenomenal thing to have been part of. Our services have grown, our team has grown with it, we've expanded over two continents, and we’ve emerged as a fully fledged ‘adult’. So I’d say one of my favourite things about being part of this place for the last decade has been watching Luminary ‘come of age’, and knowing that I’ve genuinely played a role in shaping that transition.

For me, Luminary is a great place to work because our leadership genuinely makes time to get to know the team and invest in their growth. When I first started, I used to sit with our CEO, Marty, at the end of the day, talking about the business and whatever challenges (professionally and sometimes personally) I was dealing with at the time. Those conversations helped to shape me as a professional and instilled the core values that are at the heart of who we are.

What’s stayed constant, even as we’ve grown across multiple cities and countries, is that all our leaders are still accessible and still show up to support the team in real, meaningful ways. That “people first” commitment hasn’t been diluted by scale — if anything, it’s become more deliberate. It’s a key part of our identity, and it’s what makes Luminary genuinely unique and a great place to work.

Thinking about what makes Luminary such a great place to work, I keep coming back to the same thing. While there’s been many awesome events and fun and the work we do is rewarding and best in class, I think to get real and think about what really, for me, makes such a difference here is being a small and nimble business, that really punches above it’s weight.

This enables some latitude in people’s roles - no one’s going to say no to a good idea or some hard work slightly outside of your remit. I think that at Luminary I’m a bit of a rogue. I see what I think is an improvement and I tend to just make that improvement and that’s all well and good.

However, sometimes those improvements can be quite large and transformational. I am really thankful for the org’s openness to go on those journeys with me, be it moving to a new PM system or upgrading our delivery model to be more agility based.

Obviously in the current state of play with AI, we’ve got a completely transformational piece to go through as well. That’s really exciting for me personally, working on new things and new ideas. I just applaud the organisation for allowing that openness to experiment and to do what’s needed, do what’s right, while still delivering the work side of things that I need to deliver as part of my role.

What truly makes Luminary a Great Place to Work is how intentionally we recognize and celebrate each other, both professionally and personally. One of my favorite things is that no milestone goes unnoticed here. Whether it’s a massive project launch, professional achievement, a work anniversary, or a birthday, the team always rallies to make you feel incredibly valued.

For me, the ultimate testament to this was my wedding. Not only did our CEO make the trip to celebrate with me, but they even navigated the strict travel restrictions of the COVID era, spending days in quarantine just to be there. That level of dedication goes so far beyond typical corporate leadership, showing just how deeply this company cares about its people.

From day one, it has really felt less like a traditional workplace and more like being part of a big, supportive family. Everyone genuinely roots for each other, and that kind of environment makes it a place you actually look forward to showing up to every day. Whether we're collaborating on a project or catching up during our team events, that warm, community vibe is definitely what I love most about working here.

Being able to relocate to Bali and having the opportunity to work and live in another country was also an unbelievable opportunity for me and one that I will always be grateful for.

I think Luminary is a Great Place to Work because at the heart of the culture is caring about and for people, both our teams and our clients.

We have a diverse team, people from many backgrounds and countries of origin, and value everyone’s contribution.  We go to great lengths to honour our differences and to understand one other, through communication, coaching, training and development, and by building skills around teamwork, acknowledging each other, and supporting one another through a variety of measures.

We also genuinely enjoy being together, more like a family than a workforce. It’s not unusual when our clients feel like a part of that family, too because we place great value on the relationships we build, both internally and externally.

It honestly feels like yesterday, but it's actually been almost a decade since I first walked through the doors at Luminary.

If I'm being completely honest, I had my doubts at the very beginning. Back then, the company was called Get Started, and they had only just opened their Bali office a few months prior. Leaving a stable, established job for a brand-new player in the local scene is a massive risk—one that would make most people hesitate. But after some researches and interview, I decided to jump on board.

While no workplace is perfect, Luminary comes pretty close. What I love most about our culture is that everyone actively contributes to a welcoming, respectful atmosphere. It's a space where you can pitch wild ideas, give honest feedback, and share your thoughts safely without ever feeling judged.

On top of the amazing vibe, Luminary truly invests in its people. There's a roadmap for career growth, fair compensation, and genuine recognition for hard work. Plus, the management team actually trusts us—offering the kind of flexibility with our time and workspace that makes staying productive (and happy!) effortless. Ten years later, I'm still so proud to call this place home and a great place to work.

Growing and expanding our impact

We're proud to have been recognised as a Great Place to Work for ten years running, and in recent years, as a Best Workplace in Australia, Indonesia, Technology, and Southeast Asia. But if we're being honest, these stories say more than any certification ever could.
