Netwealth

Founded in 1999, Netwealth is an ASX-200 listed wealthtech business with a focus on the superannuation and wealth management industry in Australia. The company’s website was previously supported by Umbraco 7, which was nearing its ‘end of support’. It engaged Luminary to help transition to a later edition of Umbraco, version 13.

Who We Helped:

The challenge

Netwealth’s website, a critical resource for wealth professionals, personal investors, and shareholders, was built on Umbraco 7, which had reached the end of its support lifecycle. The company sought to upgrade to Umbraco version 13, to maintain security and reliability. At the same time, the upgrade provided the opportunity to make critical improvements to content authoring and approval processes.

A key challenge was that the website relied on legacy tools, Plumber and Courier, for moving content between staging and production environments. However, these tools were no longer supported in the newer version of Umbraco. Netwealth needed a modernised approach – one that enabled content creation, preview, and approval directly within the production environment, ensuring best practice governance and compliance processes.

What we did

The migration to Umbraco 13 required meticulous attention to detail, from updating templates and components to ensuring infrastructure compatibility, and conducting extensive testing to ensure that everything was working as it should in the new environment.

Luminary’s approach was methodical and data-driven:

  • Assessment: We conducted a comprehensive audit of the existing website, identifying potential roadblocks and creating a backlog of tasks for a seamless transition.
  • Incremental migration: A phased approach was taken, upgrading templates, modules and pages one by one to ensure full compatibility with Umbraco 13.
  • Advanced testing: We implemented a mix of manual testing and automated visual regression testing to compare site performance and design across versions. This rigorous process ensured that the upgrade was imperceptible to end users while maintaining stability.
  • Infrastructure overhaul: New deployment pipelines and hosting environments were established to support Umbraco 1013, ensuring optimal performance and scalability.
  • Workflow modernisation: Given the deprecation of Plumber and Courier, we configured Umbraco’s native Workflow tool for the site. This allowed for structured content approvals, timestamped audit trails, and content rollback capabilities without requiring developer intervention.
  • Stakeholder training and support: A shift from the previous staging-based workflow to direct production authoring required careful change management. We provided training to Netwealth’s content authoring team, guiding them through the new approval process and ensuring smooth adoption.
  • Post-deployment support: Following the go-live, we remained on hand to address configuration refinements as Netwealth’s team adjusted to the new workflow.

The outcome

This transformation not only supports the longevity and security of the Umbraco platform but has also redefined content authoring and approval workflows, introducing enhanced audit trails and logging capabilities. The transition to Umbraco 13 was executed with minimal disruption, ensuring a seamless experience for Netwealth’s end users.

Key outcomes included:

  • Enhanced security and compliance: The updated content management system (CMS) for the website can now benefit from ongoing security patches and improved reliability, and passed penetration testing with flying colours.
  • Streamlined content governance: The introduction of Umbraco Workflow provided a structured, compliant content approval process, ensuring the right stakeholders review and approve changes before publication, and improved audit history.
  • Operational efficiency: Content teams have gained autonomy with a robust preview and approval system, reducing reliance on developers for content rollbacks or deployments.
  • Future-readiness: With a modern infrastructure in place, Netwealth is well-positioned for future upgrades. In essence, this upgrade wasn’t just about maintaining the status quo – it was about setting the stage for continued digital innovation, ensuring that Netwealth’s website remains a trusted and efficient marketing tool for its team and end users.
