With a focus on education, professional development, safety standards and research, ANZCA ensures the delivery of safe and high-quality anaesthetic services. It is committed to advancing anaesthesia, pain medicine, and perioperative care.
The challenge
Originally using the Kentico version 12 platform, ANZCA was looking for a new digital partner to recommend and implement a new CMS platform that could enhance the functionality and user experience of its website.
It was paramount for ANZCA to be able to amplify its news and insights to elevate and sustain its credibility as a leading membership organisation in the medical space, but its previous site’s search experience needed to be improved, and content findability enhanced.
ANZCA needed a flexible content solution that would not only support its immediate website redesign but also allow for content to be reused, shared, and scaled across future digital platforms – including potential mobile apps, microsites, and campaign channels.
What we did
ANZCA has a wide range of users who visit its site, from the general public looking for information prior to a medical procedure, to potential students, fellows, government bodies and researchers. With such a breadth of audiences, it was important to ensure that specialised medical language and terminology did not obstruct user comprehension, and each audience could achieve its online goals seamlessly.
Top-performing pages audited
Hours of technical interviews
Proto-personas developed
Technical discovery
ANZCA’s website was previously built on the Kentico 12 portal engine, based on an older .NET framework, which was approaching its support deadline.
The best options for ANZCA were to replatform the site to Kentico 13, a self-hosted and self-managed .NET Core website, or to move to the Xperience by Kentico (XbyK) SaaS (Software as a Service) option, with automatic updates, cloud hosting and managed infrastructure by Kentico.
Strategic discovery
A comprehensive research and analysis phase was conducted to uncover key strategies and opportunities that would assist ANZCA in achieving its organisational goals, while supporting its users in their online needs. The phase included an in-depth competitor and comparator review, content analysis, and the development of proto-personas to further understand the diverse range of user journeys.
Heuristic and accessibility reviews were also performed, to enhance usability and inclusivity and ensure that each user could easily find the content they needed. This strategic approach ensured that the final platform would be both comprehensive and engaging for its diverse audience base, while also reflecting the quality and leadership that ANZCA is known for in the field.
Replatforming to Xperience by Kentico
It was decided that replatforming to XbyK was the most seamless option for capability. It could support ANZCA's complex integrations and functional requirements now and in the future.
Having infrastructure managed by the vendor, Kentico has created efficiencies for ANZCA. This has led to some ANZCA team members using their time to work on the platform rather than manage dedicated infrastructure and code for the website.
While XbyK, Kentico's next-generation flagship DXP, was still relatively new on the scene when ANZCA chose it, it had a robust monthly release cycle and a rapidly evolving roadmap. This gave the ANZCA team confidence to choose XbyK as it future-proofed their investment in building the new website.
Frequent and iterative delivery of software
We began with a fast-tracked release of a core component library, giving the ANZCA team early access to Xperience by Kentico and enabling them to actively refine the remaining backlog. This collaborative approach, along with early conversations, frequent sprint reviews, regular showcases of iterations, and dedicated feedback sessions, proved essential for a successful project.
Content strategy
A comprehensive content audit of ANZCA's top 50 pages (determined by data as well as key pages identified by ANZCA) identified gaps, redundancies and user pain points, as well as overall content quality issues.
Following the audit, we developed a project content strategy aligned with ANZCA's goals and user needs that outlined resourcing requirements, a staged approach to content migration, and governance protocols for the uplift and creation of new content.
We worked closely with the content team to map existing content to a new site structure including recommendations and identifying areas for improvement post migration.
Enhancing findability
The content mapping exercise solidified the necessity of refining the site’s Information Architecture (IA) and navigation, ensuring a seamless user experience and significantly improving content findability.
We implemented structured content via XbyK’s Content Hub, decoupling content from layout and design. Instead of locking content into static pages, we built reusable content models (e.g, news, services, profiles) that can be surfaced dynamically across the site – and beyond.
A key takeaway from the discovery phase was the need to improve the search experience of the website, and fix the search feature so that the correct content loaded properly and faster when searched for.
Collaboration and responding to change
Through collaborative workshops and close partnership with the ANZCA Product Owner, we ensured a clear understanding of their needs, prioritized the feature backlog based on value, and maintained flexibility to adapt to evolving requirements.
The outcome
Using our Explore, Build, Grow framework, we delivered an end-to-end digital transformation that significantly enhanced ANZCA’s website experience. Replatforming to Xperience by Kentico provided a future-proof solution with seamless integrations, whilst a strategic content overhaul and redesign improved the site's search experience.
The improved website is now not only streamlined for content discovery and usability but it also elevates ANZCA’s ability to engage, inform, and support its diverse audience, reinforcing its position as a leader in the medical space.
